* Physicist Jameel Al-Khalili, A UK Iraqi citizen, took a personal journey into a largely forgotten era, travelling through Syria, Iran, Tunisia and Spain to tell of the great leap in scientific knowledge that took place in the Islamic world between the 8th and 14th centuries. He presented a video series entitled ''Science and Islam'' which was produced by the BBC. Terms like "algebra," "algorithm" and "alkali" are all Arabic in origin and at the very heart of modern science. There would be no modern mathematics or physics without algebra; no computers without algorithms; no chemistry without alkalis. From the great mathematician Al-Khwarizmi to Ibn Sina, whose Canon of Medicine was still in use as recently as the 19th century, Bagdad-born physicist Jameel Al-Khalili pieces together a remarkable story of the often overlooked achievements of the early medieval Islamic scientists. The first episode was entitled ''The Language of Science''. The second video was entitled ''The Empire of Reason''. A thousand years ago, the astronomer and mathematician Al-Biruni estimated the size of the earth to within a few hundred miles. Medieval Islamic scholars helped turn the magical and occult practice of alchemy into modern chemistry. And physicist Ibn al-Haytham helped establish the modern science of optics. Jameel Al-Khalili argued that these scholars were among the first to insist that all scientific theories were backed up by careful experimental observation, bringing a rigour to science that didn't exist before. The third and last episode was entitled ''The Power of Doubt''. Jameel Al-Khalili traced how the scientific revolution that took place in the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe had its roots in medieval Islam, and examined why science appeard to go into decline after the 16th and 17th centuries in the Islamic world and how today it's once again emerging.

* Alumnus Dr. Qais Ghanem wrote a note to Aden College alumni saying, '' Everyone tells me: when you finish writing a book (4 in my case) your real work really begins - the work of interesting people in reading it. I have now read numerous articles on this. Did you know that a new title is released every 4 minutes? And that the biggest booksellers in the USA, Barnes and Noble have determined that the most effective way of selling books is “word of mouth” among friends and acquaintances? Of those I have many hundreds. Perhaps I will lose a few if I bombard them with stuff about my books. That’s why I’ll do this no more than once a month on average. Blocking me is easy to do for those so inclined. So below is a table with full data and links about my 4 books, one of which has been translated into Arabic by popular demand, since the story takes place, primarily, in the fascinatingly backward Yemen. Please explore them and ask me any questions including about special discounts, but PLEASE forward the document with your opinion to your own circle of friends. Let’s see if Barnes & Noble are right. And please let me know how I can reciprocate. Thank you.'' Dr. Ghanem's email address is ghanems@ogers.com . To read the table click here.
* ''Jihadist doesn't equal psychopath'' is a column about Emir Abd el-Kader, who fought for Islamic values, and is honored from Lyon, France, to Elkader, Iowa, USA. The column was written by John P. Kiser and published by USA Today on Sept. 11th, 2013. He wrote that ''Now, Delorme and Chergui, a Catholic and a Muslim, are holding up el-Kader's example to motivate Muslims and non-Muslims in France to reach across racial, religious and historical divides. Chergui has joined with other socially conscious organizations in France to promote an annual Emir Abd el-Kader celebration day. In this, they have received the support of President Francois Hollande and the U.S. Consulate in Lyon. Back in Iowa, El-Kader continues to inspire many. Since 2008, high school and college students have been learning a different narrative of Islam thanks to the Abdelkader Global Leadership essay contest. El-Kader was elected to lead resistance against French occupiers of what is now Algeria. He lived the Quranic teaching that there should be no compulsion in matters of faith. Elkader, Iowa was named in honor of the emir by a local lawyer in 1846.'' Read more here.

* Muhammed Ibn 'Ali Ibn 'Arabi was born in Murcia in southern Spain in 1165 AD (560AH), at the time of the flowering of the Hispano-Arab culture. Since the invasion of the Iberian peninsula by the Moors in 711 AD, the southern half of Spain had been 'arabised' under Islamic rule, and Arabic became the common language of all educated people. In 'al-Andalus' the three major traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam flourished side by side in some measure of harmony, and there were many who regarded them as different roads to the same end. It was an immensely rich and talented world, as we can still see today in buildings like the Alhambra in Granada, or the Great Mosque in Cordoba; a world where the great classics of Greek literature, especially Aristotle and Plato, were translated (first into Arabic and then into Latin) and studied alongside the spiritual teachings of the three Abrahamic religions. Ibn 'Arabi grew up in an atmosphere steeped in the most important ideas - scientific, religious and philosophical - of his day. At a time when mass communication was non-existent, this was an essential ingredient in the formation of one of the most brilliant minds in the Western world. Ibn 'Arabi was not content with simply knowing about things, nor with following a particular way. Although many writers have characterised him as a great Sufi teacher firmly rooted in the Islamic world, it would be wrong to limit his appeal to a muslim audience or to see him simply as a great medieval thinker. His sole and overriding aim was to know reality as it is, in whatever way it is depicted. Naturally he expressed himself within the cultural context he knew, but he took for granted that his readers will have the same unflinching, one-pointed attitude of passion for the truth, and his writings have a very contemporary ring. "All that is left to us by tradition", he writes, "is mere words. It is up to us to find out what they mean". Today Ibn Arabi is seen as a great Muslim thinker and philosopher and there are websites which were established to discuss his thoughts and books. There is The Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi Society www.ibnarabisociety.org.

* A new book was released by Malala Yousafzai entitled ''I am Malala''. She is a Pakistani girl from a Bashtun tribe who wanted to study and promote learning in school in Pakistan. That was her uncalculated mistake which almost cost her life. She was shot in the head by extremists who are against girls education in the Taliban region of Pakistan. According to BBC Europe news website, the Pakistani school girl and campaigner has won the EU's Sakharov human rights prize. The Sakharov Prize for free speech is awarded by the European Parliament annually in memory of Soviet physicist and dissident Andrei Sakharov. She joins a distinguished list of winners of the Sakharov Prize which includes South Africa's Nelson Mandela and Aung San Suu Kyi in Burma, also known as Myanmar. The award will be officially presented at a ceremony in Strasbourg in November. The BBC Europe news website mentioned that Malala received a standing ovation in July this year for an address to the United Nations General Assembly, in which she vowed she would never be silenced. Malala rose to prominence in 2009 after writing a blog anonymously for the BBC Urdu service about her life under Taliban rule and the lack of education for girls. During the month of October 2013, Malala was awarded the honorary citizen of Canada. With this award, Malala became one of the famous leaders in the world who received this award.

* The True History of Quran in America is an article written by Ted Widmer, nine years after the Sept. 11 attack. He reiterated that ''As usual, the Founders were way ahead of us. They thought hard about how to build a country of many different faiths. And to advance that vision to the fullest, they read the Koran, and studied Islam with a calm intelligence that today’s over-hyped Americans can only begin to imagine. They knew something that we do not. To a remarkable degree, the Koran is not alien to American history — but inside it.'' Read the article here.
