Abdulla Oqba - My Valued Teacher
By Dr. Abdulla Al Sayyari (Al-Khader), Professor of Medicine, King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences- Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

I have had good teachers while at Aden College. However one teacher that stands head and shoulder above the others must be Abdulla Oqba.

I have had good teachers while at Aden College.  I remember Mr. Fox ( who was the Headmaster during part of my time there). Miss Duffy who taught me English (although she was seemingly aloof and remote, I felt she was a good teacher). Then there was an excellent Lebanese teacher who taught me Chemistry (I think his name was Mr.Sumayer) and Mr. Chaterjee who taught Science. I also remember a teacher, Mr. Chelwan, who taught me biology at A level.

However one teacher that stands head and shoulder above the others must be Abdulla Oqba. He himself was a graduate of Aden College. I remember well when he stated teaching us history after coming back from UK having finished his University Education there. He was like a breath of fresh air, young, dynamic, enthusiastic and very caring for (all) his students.

Besides being an excellent teacher, he adopted an engaging educational philosophy of student empowerment through encouraging critical thinking and enhancing student involvement and involvement.

I remember one of the things he  did almost immediately he joined the college as a teacher was to start a competition among the 4th year students to write an article on the Arab conibution to human Civilization.

If I am not mistaken the prize was the famed book by Philip Hitti – History of the Arabs.

Many years later, I became interested in the writings of Ibn Khaldoun and wrote a couple of scholarly articles on him. One of those articles was on the unbelievably “modern” views of Ibn Khaldoun on Educational theories and their relevance to today’s medical education methods.

While writing these articles I was struck by how these theories reminded of Abdulla Oqba’s modern education methods in keeping with Ibn Khaldoun’s theories which include the following quotes from Al Muqaddimmah.

:
This is a wonderful message from my dear old close friend Dr Professor
Waheeb confirming that his specialty is medicine. His father was a great
swimmer and also Waheeb who was also a lover of poetry and politics.
Muhammad Zain Al-Hazimi was also with us in Aden College one year ahead of us
and was a talented artist.

Message from Dr. Waheeb Abdul Rahim Bahoudaila to Dr Shihab Ghanem :
Dear Shihab.
This is your classmate at Aden College, your  friend & neighbor in  Aden Colony, Crater - AL Katee -Waheeb Abdul Rahim Bahoudaila (ALMASRY
).
I am  a physician , a specialist in Obstetric & Gynaecology,  with Ph.D. degree from the Academy in Sofia- Bulgaria.
Dear Shihab please ask my friend Mohammad Zein Alhazmi. I think you will all remember our days in Aden College, our discussions, our sports and our cultural activities in poetry, in journalism. Though they were very humble but it was the beginning and had left happy memories in our souls. By the way I am following your e-mails and admiring your wide activities and your creative works. I am eager to read your books in Arabic and in English too. Really,  I am in need of such readings because now  I am in Sofia - Republic of Bulgaria, since 1987, after I have suffered from  the terrible civil war in Aden, with my Bulgarian wife Elena, (she was teaching with me in Aden University);  and with  my two daughters who were born in Aden and lived in Khormaksar with us.
Dear Shihab.
Wish you good heath; You & all your family, your brothers: Qais etc…
Your sister who was a classmate in the Girls secondary School in Aden , With my sister Anisa.
Kisses from me- Shihab

May I first of all congratulate the Editors Drs Sayyari, Shihab and Isam and you Ashraf, on the excellent production of the Aden College web site which brought back so many old memories of my years at Aden College. Mr Fawcus's name was Danny Fawcus.
I completed my Pure Maths, Applied Maths and Physics A-Levels at Aden College in 1958 and finished my studies in first Kingston University
(UK) and then City University (UK) where I studied MSc in Water Engineering. I qualified as a Chartered Civil Engineer in 1968 and have since worked for Consultants, Greater London Council and in Libya and Syria. I am now living in the UK.
At Kingston, one of my
colleagues was Faisal Othman Bin Shamlan who became a Minister in the Aden Government.
Other students at Aden who I remember would be Hussain Mahyoub Sultan, Ali Jaafer Nasser, Munawar Hazmi, Qais Ghanem, Raza Yousef and many others. My teachers were Danny Fawcus, Mr Miller, Mr Nazir, Mr Hunt, Mr Lutfi Jaafer Aman, Mr McNeill, Mr Lowden, Mr Chilwan, and Mr Narayan.

I will no doubt keep in touch and email to you any relevant college material that I can lay my hands on.
With best wishes

Jamal Abdul Hamid

I was one of the first students to join Aden College in the first year, along with Qais Ghanem, Mohamed Abdulkader Girgirah, Awad Mubgar, Vinod Shah, Kishore Shah and others. Aden College started in September 1952 according to my memory .

I feel we owe a deep debt of gratitude to Aden College and our teachers who taught and nurtured us that enabled us to reach the heights that so many of us have achieved. I am at present a Senior Lecturer in Information Systems in the European Business School, Regents College, Regents Park, London. Jamal Abdul Hamid, an ex Alumni of Aden College told me about the Aden College website and it was very touching to see the old faces again with whom I grew up. Those are days one never forgets. I am very grateful to those of you who have set it up. Shihab Ghanem might remember me as I was one year senior to him in the same class as Qais Ghanem.(I also appear in the other group photo on the website, the second person in the first row after Abdulla Hibshi). It would be a pleasure to meet again if something is organised.

With lots of fond memories
Raza Yousef

I wish to convey my happiness, gratitude and respect for our colleagues, Prof. Abdulla Al-Saayari, Dr Shihab Ghanem and Ashraf Girgrah and all others, who thought of and executed the Aden College website, which I found  to be  the best medicine for my nostalgia to Aden and Aden College. Such a project was over due,
(Hats are raised to those who have done it). The website is a state of the art in its design and execution. It will help to  provide  valuable channels of communications and reconnections for all of us after so many decades of disconnect.
